On Friday June 28, 2024, Roberta Ann Wornell passed peacefully from this world. She was born Roberta Ann Smith on September 27, 1937 to Mary K. (Gunzburg) Smith and Robert A. Smith. After a family move to Texas, she met and married Loydd E. Wornell – the love of her life- on January 22, 1955. Together they raised 2 children (Mark and Eddie) after eventually settling in Midland Texas. Roberta was active in Altrusa and Desk & Derrick. She was also a member of Memorial Christian Church where she served as a Deacon, Elder, various chairmanships and anything else she was asked to do. She was especially active with the church food pantry – many are the afternoon or evening her family spent being volun-told into bagging beans and rice or sorting various donations. Her distinctive white Lincoln made many trips between Midland and the Odessa food bank laden with enough donations to turn it into an accidental low rider.
Roberta and Loydd were also square dancers back in the day, and the whole family rode motorcycles. They enjoyed several trips to Europe. Perhaps one of Roberta’s greatest joys was her grandchildren- Robert, Charlotte, and Glynn. Berta spent many years picking them up after school and helping to get them to after-school activities. For her granddaughter, Charlotte, this almost always included a stop by Albertson’s for an after-school snack of crusty freshly baked French bread.
Roberta also enjoyed a close relationship with her daughter-in-law, Patricia Wornell. They often volunteered together at Memorial Christian Church. Roberta often told her granddaughter how lucky she was to have Pat in her life.
Berta was blessed to have the joy of 2 great-grandchildren in her life as well. She was actively involved in helping raise her great-granddaughter, Cutrina, and thrilled to watch her become a lovely young woman. Her great-grandson, Rory, was a joy in her last few years. It was beautiful to see the smiles that seeing him produced.
Roberta is preceded in death by her dear husband, Loydd Elwin Wornell, and her youngest and beloved son George Edward Wornell.
Berta is survived by her oldest son, Robert Mark Wornell and wife Patricia (Hardy) Wornell. Grandchildren – Robert Wornell and wife Cory (Timmons) Wornell, Charlotte (Wornell) Dixon and husband Graham Dixon, and Glynn Wornell.
Great grandchildren – Cutrina Wornell and fiancé Nathaniel Fangon, Rory Wornell, and Cliff and Carl Dixon.
The family has chosen not to have a public service and in lieu of flowers ask for donations to the local animal rescue of your choice.
