Robert Lenton Oakes, 78, passed away peacefully at home in Midland, Texas, on May 11, 2025. Born in Santa Anna, Texas, Robert lived a full and adventurous life marked by service, hard work, and a deep love for the outdoors and his family.
A proud graduate of Brownwood High School, Class of 1964, Robert went on to serve his country as an airborne medic—jumping from helicopters as both an active-duty soldier and later with the Texas Army National Guard. His service and courage left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Following his military service, Robert earned a BBA from Howard Payne University in 1969. He began a long and distinguished career in the oil and gas industry, starting with U.S. Steel Corp. His 27-year journey took him across the country and around the world—from Houston and New Orleans to Tallinn, Estonia, and the Gulf of Mexico—before finally settling in Midland, Texas.
In 1997, Robert founded his own business, Five-Star Pipe & Equipment, continuing to serve the petroleum field with the same passion and drive that had defined his entire career.
Robert was not only a dedicated professional but also an avid outdoorsman. He cherished time spent hunting, fishing, bonfires with friends, going on trail rides, working his farm, and caring for his beloved horses. His love of the land and the simple joys of country life were central to who he was.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jody Oakes; his sons, Justin Oakes and Brad Oakes; daughter-in-law Bonnie Oakes; granddaughters Katelyn and Lacey; sister Lenda Oakes; and nephews Bryan Hughes and Frankie Melendrez. Robert’s legacy of strength, integrity, and adventure will live on in all who knew and loved him.
