Rita Fay Fort, 88, of Midland, TX (formerly Big Spring), went home to be with her Lord Jesus on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at her home in Legacy Ranch Memory Care Center in Midland, TX. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Trinity Memorial Park chapel.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 13th at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home..
Rita was born February 28, 1933 in El Paso, TX and married John Edwin Fort, Jr. on May 3, 1953 In Big Spring, TX. They were high school sweethearts and both graduated from Big Spring High School. They raised three children, Lori Ann, Mark Edwin and Lisa Dee Fort. They owned Rita’s Flowers in Big Spring from 1979 to 1986.
Rita served as the Women’s Residence Hall Supervisor, before retiring from Howard College. After retirement, she spent several years as a frequent substitute teacher at Colorado City High School and Big Spring High School, where she was lovingly referred to as “grandma” by the students. Her actual grandchildren called her “Gigi”. She had a soft heart for young people and puppy dogs. She was a devoted follower of Christ and was a member of First Baptist Church in Big Spring.

Survivors include her daughters, Lori Ann Miller/husband Kerry of Midland; and Lisa Dee Dunnam/husband Craig of Big Spring; Granddaughter-Allison Miller Creswell/husband Lance of Greenwood; Grandsons: Drew Miller/wife Bryana of Midland; Cody Carnes/wife Kari of Nashville, TN; and Will Currie of Austin. She had 7 great grandchildren: Hannah, Ryder and Landry Creswell; Canyon and Kingston Carnes; and Zellie and Tobin Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Fort. Jr., her son, Mark Edwin Fort, her parents, Hack Wright and Flora Bell Gill; her sister, Lynn Ballenger; and one grandson, Mark Edwin Fort, Jr. The family suggests memorials to Heart to Heart Hospice Center of Midland, TX.
