On December 10, 2025, Rita Chere Boone Cone passed peacefully into the presence of her Maker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Barry Kenton Boone and Rita Joan McDonald Boone Zimmermann Knox; and her grandparents, Kenton S. Boone, Ruth J. Boone, Dwight W. McDonald, and Gladys Midkiff McDonald.
Rita was born on September 15, 1952, in Midland, Texas. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1970 and went on to earn a degree in Anthropology from The University of Texas at Austin in 1974. A proud Longhorn for life, Rita was a devoted fan of the University of Texas Longhorns and also cheered passionately for the Dallas Cowboys, enjoying football as much for the camaraderie and excitement as for the game itself.
On February 5, 1983, she married Robert “Bobby” Cone, and together they shared many loving years.
Rita had a truly big heart and a deep love for people from all walks of life. She had a gift for helping others through every stage of life, always offering support, compassion, and understanding. She loved history and had a remarkable ability to connect the past to the present through engaging stories and thoughtful conversation. Her laughter was contagious, and she was often the life of the party, bringing joy, warmth, and light wherever she went.
Above all, Rita had a profound love for animals. Her home was never without dogs and cats, each one cherished as family. Her kindness and care extended naturally to all living beings, reflecting the generous spirit that defined her life.
Rita is survived by her sister, Michelle Boone Mauzy; her nephew, Dustin L. Gragg, his wife, Mande, and their sons, Wesley and Garrett; her niece, Kacey Chere Whisenhunt, her husband, Aaron Whisenhunt, and their daughters, Elizabeth and Emily; her uncle, D. M. “Buddy” McDonald; his wife, Sue; and their daughter, Rita’s cousin, Julie McDonald Garrett; along with many dear friends whose lives she touched.
