Richard Carl GibsonRichard C. Gibson died peacefully at his home on March 25, 2018. He was born on May 29, 1939 in Cairo, Egypt to George Randall and Orpha Olsen Gibson while George was working with Mobil Oil mapping the North Africa oilfields. In 1941 the Gibson’s settled in Midland, Texas.Richard attended Midland High School, graduating in 1957. From there he began his college education at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California graduating magna cum laude with a degree in political science. He attended graduate school at Stanford University and The University of Texas Law School receiving his law degree in 1965 and becoming a member of the Texas Bar Association. He also attended The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.While working as an attorney with the Legislative Council for the State of Texas, Richard married Nancy Hermann in Monterey, Mexico on March 25, 1967. He would go on to serve as chief legal council for The University of Texas System until 1975 when they moved to Midland to join the family oil and gas business.Richard served in many volunteer roles for the local community including serving for over 30 years with the Midland Memorial Hospital in the roles of chairman of the board of trustees, member of the board of governors, and governor emeritus. He also served on the board of trustees for the University of Redlands and as president of The Racquet Club board in Midland.In addition to his family, Richard dearly loved his pets and had a lifelong interest in auto racing, being involved at all levels of the sport – from fan to driver to team owner.He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Randall Gibson. Richard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy; his daughter Marisa and her husband Bruce Selkirk and their children Ben, Lizzy and Claire; and daughter Sally and her husband Kip Agar and their children Frank, Gib, and Lillian. The family would like to thank long time friends for their support, as well as Dr. Summer Merritt and Lydia Hernandez.A private burial service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park on March 27, 2018 followed by a reception at The Racquet Club of Midland at 3:00 pm.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the “Midland Memorial Hospital Foundation, Richard and Nancy Gibson Endowment Fund” or the charity of your choice.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Crematory.
