Red Weiss left us on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 to go to a better place. Ruby, Anita Gay and Fred will miss him dearly. Red had always been a man full of energy, with a great curiosity about the world he lived in and full of a very strong faith in his God. The last few years had been difficult for him, as he was stricken with macular degeneration, loss of hearing and loss of use of his legs. Despite that, he continued to be upbeat, positive, deeply interested in his friends and their wellbeing and caring greatly about his church family.Red grew up in Oklahoma in very tough times. Red was not timid. On his own at 14, he was looking for work and he was asked if he could drive a truck. Although he had never driven a truck, he said he could, and he did. That describes who he was – someone who answered necessity’s call. He served in the US Army with distinction. He cared about those around him. He spent his lifetime in the oilfield working hard. He was trustworthy, hardworking, smart about the oilfield and how it worked. He was curious about all things mechanical. He was full of energy, always positive. He knew every road and rig in the West Texas oil fields. He spent hours on end driving deep into the oilfields to supervise rigs far from home. He worked his way up from rough neck to drilling superintendent working for Ard Drilling Company and later for Rod Ric Drilling Co.Red and Ruby travelled a lot in later years. Among their trips was an around-the-world trip with no travel agency or any help at all. American Express called Fred to see if they should be concerned about the charges from overseas. That was Red. He knew what he wanted to do and he did it.As Red grew in the oil field and the equipment business, his devotion to his God grew. He and Ruby were involved, caring members of their congregation. Red always had with him “business” cards he would leave where people might see them, calling people to the Lord. He and Ruby served their church and their fellow congregants with all their heart. They firmly believed in God’s word and in God’s plan. Red Weiss lived his faith. His granddaughter wrote of him: “He was a character. A redhead. A self-made man. A pot-stirrer. He put popcorn in his milk and butter on his radishes. He started his shopping on Christmas Eve. He loved his wife and he spoiled us all with his love and attention. Tonight he walks with the Lord he worshipped and we celebrate his life”.Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at North A Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.,
