Raymond Roy Fagen, 69, of Midland, Texas passed away on December 25, 2024 after a courageous battle fighting leukemia. Throughout his life, including his final battle, the love of his life LaRue was always by his side. His children were very important to him, and they joined LaRue as he passed peacefully at his home of 30 years.
Raymond was born in Wadsworth, OH on May 12, 1955. At a young age, his family moved to Iowa, and he always considered Iowa his childhood home. He graduated from Southeast Polk High School in 1973.
Ray married LaRue Courtney in Tuscombia, AL on November 10, 1980. They had met while both studying meteorology at Iowa State University. After Ray attended Iowa State for two years, Ray transferred to the University of Michigan where he graduated with a degree in Meteorology in 1977. He then attended Officer Candidate School and received his Navy Ensign orders and began his 35- year career in meteorology. After his initial commitment to the Navy was fulfilled, he continued to serve his country in the Navy Reserve until he retired with the rank of Commander. Ray was proud of his military service throughout his life. As a civilian, Ray was employed as a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Ray served as Meteorologist-In-Charge at the Midland weather office from 1994 until his retirement in 2012.
Ray had many interests and had a special passion for baseball. He attended a World Series game, several spring training games, fall league ball games, local minor league games, MBL games and was involved in several fantasy baseball leagues. Ray ran in many 10K, half-marathon and marathon road races. His favorite marathon was the 1986 Marine Corp Marathon. He also enjoyed watching European futbol, playing strategy games and traveling to see the world.
Ray is survived by his wife of 44 years, LaRue; his children, Wade (Kiri) Fagen-Ulmschneider of Urbana, IL, Sara (Kendall) Thomas of Midland, Texas, Paul (Emily Buzzard) Fagen of University Heights, OH; and granddaughter River Thomas.
Ray’s immediate family is celebrating his life privately.
