Lona Dolores Hood, 96, of Midland, TX, went to be with our Lord and Savior on August 19, 2024.

Gone from this world but never from our hearts, Lona, affectionately called Mimi by many, was born to H. Floyd & Rose Brigham in Stamford, TX, on May 26, 1928. Lona was married to the late R. Paul Hood on November 15, 1946 in Stamford, Texas. After 55 years of marriage, Lona was preceded in death by Paul on October 27, 2001.

Lona leaves a legacy of a beautiful family who cherished her loving, giving heart. Those include her daughter, Paula Heard, of Alabaster, AL; grandson Michael Heard of Birmingham, AL, and wife Nancy Heard and great-grandsons Levi and Paul, and grandson Steven Heard of Colorado Springs, CO and wife Holly Heard, and great-granddaughter Emily Heard. She is survived by her son, Nick Hood, of Midland and wife Karen Hood; grandson Danny Hood, of Leander, TX and wife Analisa Hood, great-daughter Arica Hood and great-grandson, Ethan Hood of Austin; grandson, Matt of Midland, Texas and wife, Debbie and great-grandson, Eli Hood, and great-granddaughter, Maddie Hood; and grandson, Nathan Hood and Jen Hodgens of Midland, Texas.

Special recognition to sister-in-law Mary Jane Brigham of San Antonio, Texas; niece, Jamie Johnson of Chesapeake, VA; and cousin, Cindy Radway of Paris, Texas.

Lona was a long-time member of the 14^th and Main Church of Christ in Big Spring, Texas. She and her husband, Paul, founded Haven House in Big Spring, TX. Lona, as a long-time employee of the V. A. Hospital, saw a need for patient family housing while caring for their loved ones. Families could stay at Haven House free of charge and in close proximity to the V. A. Hospital. Lona received special recognition from Governor Ann Richards for her vision and dedication to Veterans. Haven House has been a blessing to the V. A. families.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 22, 2024 at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.

To the family and friends of Lona Hood, I want to send my sincere condolences. I first met Lona at Helen Greathouse Manor where she, my mother, five other ladies and I faithfully played chickenfoot (dominos) every week. It was the highlight of my mother's week, and the eight of us who played always enjoyed the time we had together. I lost my mom, Freddye Skinner, five years ago, but I felt led to continue to check up on the ladies that had been such a special part of her life. Lona was one of those who I tried to check up on regularly. She was such a precious lady, and I always enjoyed my visits with her. Today, as I went to visit the remaining ladies, I was sad to hear about her passing. As I spoke with two of the others who shared our special memories, they, too, were saddened by your loss. Each time one of these special people goes to be with the Lord, I hope that they will rejoice in the Lord along with my mother. They were the last true friends to her, and I am so thankful to have known and shared such special memories with them. Paula, I’m so sorry to hear of your moms passing. She was such a sweet lady. I always enjoyed our visits at Manor Park. I’ll be praying for you and the family during this difficult time.
