Larry Fryar, 78, of Big Spring, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022 in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park.
Larry was born June 16, 1943 in Big Spring to Harvey (Pig) and Gwen Fryar and was a graduate of Coahoma High School. He was a member of Prairie View Baptist Church. He married Sandra Clanton on July 3, 1964 and shared 56 wonderful years together before her passing in 2020.
As a boy, Larry grew up on a farm working alongside his much beloved father Pig. Larry loved boat racing, drag racing and anything to do with hot rods. He took great pride in all his vehicles, and you would never catch him riding in anything that wasn’t clean and shining. After graduating from high school, he attended Howard College briefly just so he could flirt with Sandie since she was attending classes there. He also taught welding at Howard College for a bit. After marriage to his sweetheart and best friend, Larry worked at Sid Richardson then eventually followed in his father’s footsteps and took to farming on his own. He was given the distinction of Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year in the early 1990’s. He was also a contract pumper for a number of years.
Larry had many friends and was loved by so many. He was a true friend and there wasn’t much he wouldn’t do for just about anyone. He especially loved being around his grandchildren and enjoyed taking annual family trips to the Frio River. Papa (as he was called by his grandchildren) even surprised them with a Disney Cruise. He and Sandie loved spoiling them.
Larry is survived by one son: Kerry Fryar and wife Neanda, four granddaughters: Cailey Whaley and husband Payton, Madison Fryar, Maciee Fryar and Nevaeh Fryar; two grandsons, Blaine Martin and Reagan Martin; one great grandson: Jaxon Whaley; one sister: Shanna Porter and husband Gary and his beloved dog Coco.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sandie, daughter Leslie Martin and parents Harvey (Pig) and Gwen Fryar.
Pallbearers will be Stanley Haney, Donnie Reid, Tommy Wegner, Walter Brumley, Marcus Phillips and Bobby Joe Tucker. Honorary pallbearers are Greg Martin, Andy Dunson, Payton Whaley and grandsons, Blaine and Reagan Martin.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Dora Roberts Rehab Center.
