Joyce Inez Reid passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease on October 23, 2024 in Midland, Texas where she had resided for 61 years. She led a life marked by her faith, family, and friends. A faithful Christian with a servant’s heart, there is no doubt she was welcomed at the gates of heaven by the Master with, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
Joyce was born in Brazos County Texas to Oren Richard and Maggie Inez Broadus Wilson on July 20, 1941. Her early years were spent in Edge, Texas where she began her education in a one-room schoolhouse at Kurten, Texas. The family later moved to Electra, Texas where she attended Electra High School. She married Don Reid on March 8, 1957 in Electra. They moved to Midland, Texas in 1963 and joined Crestview Baptist Church with their young family. Joyce was a member of the Blessed Sunday School class where she made many treasured friendships.
After her faith, Joyce’s family was the most important of all to her. Every child and grandchild knew they were loved by Mama and Mamaw. A devoted mother, she never missed an opportunity to support her children in their many activities. From sports to baton twirling, she was the team mom, the Cub/Girl Scout leader, the Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher, and the boat driver for many waterskiing weekends spent on the lake. A talented seamstress and avid reader, Joyce gifted each grandchild with a handmade quilt upon their high school graduation. She sewed everything from elaborate Halloween costumes to wedding gowns (which she later turned into baby quilts) to motorcycle jackets. She especially enjoyed sharing her love of sewing, crafting, reading and storytelling with her grandchildren.
Over the years, she worked for various businesses in Midland where she never met a stranger including Johnnie’s BBQ in the Village, Leggett’s Fabric Store, Dunlap’s, Dillard’s and finally Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Charlotte Lou Wilson, mother-in-law, Maxine Reid and daughter-in-law, Verna Reid. Left to cherish her legacy of faith and love are her daughter, LaJuan (David) Holster of Midland, Texas and three sons, Rex (Tammy) Reid of Liberty Hill, Texas, Stephen (Tracey) Reid of Cross Plains, Texas and Michael Glen of Celina, Texas, 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is also survived by a sister, Thena (Bill) Parrott of College Station, Texas, 2 nephews and a host of beloved cousins.
A graveside service is set for Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Church Cemetery in Edge, Texas where Joyce will be laid to rest next to her parents and sister.
A very special thanks to Hospice of Midland and the staff of the Younger Unit at Manor Park for their loving and compassionate care of Mama.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland, Texas and Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
