Joy Marlene Dickerhoof passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Midland, Texas. She was 90 years old.
Joy was born Joy Marlene Scheiller on March 12, 1936, to Catherine and John Scheiller in Akron, Ohio. She earned a bachelor’s degree and met her future husband, Dean Dickerhoof, at the University of Akron. Dean and Joy were married on August 27, 1958. Dean’s work took them to Golden, Colorado, where they lived for 62 years and raised their two girls, Katerina and Cheryl. In 2023, Joy and Dean moved to Midland, Texas, to be near Katerina.
Joy was appropriately named for she truly possessed a joyful spirit. Her joy was rooted in her Christian faith. Joy loved reading the Bible, discovering its depths, and sharing what she uncovered with others, both children and adults. When Katerina and Cheryl were young, Joy led after-school Good News Clubs for the neighborhood children. As the girls grew, she transitioned to teaching and encouraging children through Child Evangelism Fellowship’s correspondence courses. She also helped with children’s Sunday school at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Lakewood, Colorado.
When Katerina and Cheryl entered junior high, Joy accepted a teaching position at Maranatha Christian Center. She flourished as a kindergarten teacher and so did the students who were in her classroom. She taught there for many years. While teaching kindergarten, Joy branched out to serve in other areas at Shepherd of the Hills. She helped in the office, visited homebound, taught adult Bible studies and helped start Pillow Hugs, a ministry that cares for hurting children. After she retired from teaching, she continued to teach Bible studies and work with Pillow Hugs until she moved to Midland.
In Midland, Joy continued to touch the hearts of those around her with her smile, listening ear and ready prayers. She will be greatly missed.
Joy is survived by her daughter Katerina Scott, by her sons-in-law Gary Scott and Robert Fox, and by her grandchildren David Scott and Aurora Scott. She is preceded in death by her husband Dean Dickerhoof and her daughter Cheryl Fox.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, August 14, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Midland, Texas. An interment service will be held in Colorado on Saturday, October 3, at 1:00 pm, at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Lakewood.
