Jose Guadalupe Chávez, 66 of Midland, passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 30, 2022. A viewing will be held from 8:00am-9:00pm, Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00pm, Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00am, Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. The family has requested that he be cremated.
“Lupe,” as he was widely known, was born on November 6, 1955 in the mountain town of Jalpan de Serra, Querétaro, Mexico to Catalina Chávez and Mauro Villeda. He migrated to West Texas in the early 1970s where he met his wife, Maria del Refugio Esquivel, raised his children, worked—first in the oil fields and subsequently in construction for most of his life—and led a successful musical career as a songwriter, touring musician, and recording artist, most notably with the local group “Los Magos” and later in collaboration with his son.
Lupe is survived by his daughter Catalina Chávez-Terrell, son Alex Emmanuel Chávez, and his grandson Sebastian Alex Chávez-Terrell. Lupe is preceded in death by his wife, Maria del Refugio Esquivel and daughter Catalina Chávez.
The family would like to express their gratitude towards family and friends who have given their condolences and support during their time of grief.
Pallbearers will be David Betancourt, Eduardo Carrasco, Enrique Chavez, Leonel Chavez, Max Chavez, Eleazar Garay, Jesse Munguia, and Adrian Rivas.
