John (Jack) Franklin Herbig died on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at his home of natural causes. Services will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Christ Church Midland. He was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on December 12, 1932 to Harold Daniel and Ruth Wilson Herbig. When Jack was three years old, his father died and his mother returned to her home in El Campo, Texas when he was nine. Jack graduated from El Campo High School in 1951 where he played football as a quarterback and was an outstanding student. He graduated from Texas A & M University in 1955 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. At graduation, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He spent sixteen months in Korea and was honorably discharged after two years. He then went to work for Texaco in East Texas. In 1959, he married Kathryn Anne Setzler and they moved to a Texaco Company Camp in South Texas, just 20 miles from Zapata, Texas. They moved to Liberty, Texas for five years with Texaco, then Jack went to work for United Energy in San Antonio in 1968. By this time, three sons had joined the family and they kept Jack busy coaching Little League and YMCA football. After 10 years in San Antonio, Jack moved his family to Midland in 1978 where he worked as an independent oil operator.Jack was a member of The Society of Petroleum Engineers for over 50 years. He was a long time member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry and as Junior Warden. He enjoyed his membership in the Holy Trinity Men's Club, which he served as president for several years. He was a member of Christ Church Midland and had been a member of the Exchange Club.Jack was preceded in death by his parents and by his grandson, John Franklin Herbig III.He is survived by his wife, Anne and his sons; John and his wife Lisa and their sons Grady and Luke of Midland; David and his wife Carla and their daughter Alex and son Tait of Fredericksburg; Andy and his wife Anabella and their daughters Audrey and Anna of Laredo.
