John Hughes, 77, of Garden City, Texas, died on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at his residence. Rosary services will be at 7:00 PM Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Father Francis Njoku, officiating.He was born on September 7, 1932, in Brady, Texas and married Carolyn Mangum on July 18, 1962 in Del Rio.The son of Burt and Mabel Hughes, he was raised in Brady and graduated from Brady High School in 1949. He attended St. Mary's University and St. Mary's School of Law before going to South Texas College of Law. He worked as a licensed attorney in Brady, Texas and also was involved in a Title and Abstract Company with his father in Brady. John later worked as Vice-President of the Land and Legal Department for Winn Exploration in Corpus Christ until his retirement, moving to Garden City in 2004. He was a lifetime hunter and fiisherman.He was a member of the Brady Rotary Club while he lived in Brady, had served as a Special Texas Ranger and worked as the Civil Defense Coordinator for 10 years in McCullough County. John was involved in raising the funds to establish the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Hughes of Garden City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Pam Hughes of Midland and Bob and Cindy Hughes of Plano; three grandsons, Taylor Hughes and wife, Elizabeth, Travis Hughes and Trevor Hughes; four granddaughters, Brecklyn Hughes, Kallie Hughes, Taylor Hughes and Meagan Hughes; and a nephew, Burt Bruton and wife, Shirley and their family.He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John William "Bill" Hughes, Jr. on March 21, 2009; one sister, Virginia Bruton; and an infant brother.The family suggests memorials be made to Glasscock County EMS, PO Box 55, Garden City, TX 79739 and wish to express a special thanks to Compass Hospice of Big Spring.Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
