John David McKinney was born on March 29, 1953 in Midland, Texas to Elizabeth and Owen McKinney. Growing up, John was active in boy scouting as a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also an active member of Junior Achievement.
After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1971, John attended Abilene Christian College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1975. He went to work for Shell Oil Company in Denver City after graduation and on January 17, 1976, he married Patrice Cooper. John and Patrice moved to Odessa in 1978 where John attended The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, receiving his Master’s Degree in Business Administration. They also lived in Hobbs for a short time and in Midland for the past 36 years.
John changed career paths, leaving the oilfield and going to work for the FDIC in 1984, becoming the first person in the United States to receive his designation as a review appraiser. John settled into a career in real estate including sales and appraising and eventually started his own residential real estate appraisal business.
John loved to play Spades and 42 but one of his favorite hobbies was traveling. He and Patrice traveled frequently to Virginia and the East Coast as John had a love of Revolutionary War history. His favorite movie was “It’s A Wonderful Life.”
John believed that the focus of his life should be Kingdom work and he did just that. John was a member of the Golf Course Road Church of Christ where he served on the church planting committee, helping to plant more than 50 churches. Another ministry that John loved was KWO (Kenya Widows and Orphans) and he served on the KWO board for a number of years.
