John D. Carey, 86, of Midland, passed away peacefully at home on Monday evening, March 17, 2014 in Midland. Services will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 1:30PM at Christ Church in Midland.John was born to Gladys and Paul Carey in Guthrie, OK. He is preceded by his two brothers Paul and Harold Carey.John married his childhood sweetheart, Patricia, also of Guthrie on June 25, 1949. John and Patricia enjoyed 59 full years of marriage before Patricia preceded him in 2009. John and Patricia were residents of Midland continuously since 1973 and developed far too many friendships and relationships to be listed here, but each were special to them and continue to this day. They had a previous residence in Midland from 1960 through 1969, interrupted by a transfer to St. Louis, MO from 1969 through 1973 before returning to Midland.He is survived by his children; daughter, Janet (Gerald) Langley of CA; daughter, Barbara Kolb of Austin, TX; son, John D. Jr. (Nancy) Carey of Tucson, AZ; and son Max A. (Kim) Carey of Plano, TX. His five grandchildren, Sharyn Mairani, Kasey Biggs, Aaron Kolb, Samantha De La Torre and Allen Carey along with three great grandchildren, Ryder, Acen and Hailey.He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University, while attending on both academic and football scholarships. As a quarterback, he competed in both the 1946 Sugar Bowl and 1949 Delta Bowl and was inducted into the Guthrie Hall of Fame in 1993. John was a highly respected athlete and competitor and was an enthusiastic alumni member of Oklahoma State University. He was an avid Golfer and among the three Holes-in-Ones he recorded during his playing days he was proud to have shot his age at 73 at Midland Country Club.Upon graduation, he worked as a landman for over 60 years beginning his career with Continental Oil Company (now Conoco) as an oil scout/landman and retired with Avance Oil and Gas Company in Midland. Among the many different local associations through the years, John was a member of the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) and the local Permian Basin Landman Association (PBLA). He counted his numerous close and lasting friendships, associations and contacts in the Oil and Gas industry as one of his greatest accomplishments.John was a member of Christ Church Midland, He found guidance, comfort and friendship through his participation and service and so appreciated the faith and devotion of his “family” there. He devoted his life and efforts to living in GOD’s light and now joins his wife Patricia for eternity.In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be donated to Christ Church Midland, 5501 North Midkiff Rd, Midland, TX, 79705, or Hospice Midland, PO Box 2621, Midland, TX, 79702.,
