Joe was born in Brady, Texas on August 7, 1941, to Edna and Marshall Banks. He spent his childhood in Brady until the family moved to Midland in 1958.
He graduated from Midland High School in 1959. In October of 1959 he joined the army and was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. He was honorably discharged on October 5, 1962. While in Georgia he met the love of his life, Imogene Harrison. Joe and Imogene united in marriage on February 3, 1962. Together they moved to Newnan GA where they raised 4 children, Marshall, James, Lee, and Jessica.
During the time they lived in Georgia Joe never gave up his Texas heritage, with many family vacations taken back to his hometowns of Midland and Brady Texas. In 1980 Joe decided it was time to move the family to Midland where they all built their lives together.
While in the Army he completed multiple aircraft training courses & received a citation from the President for the fastest engine scrap on a H-34 helicopter. He also shot a perfect score from 600 yards while in Basic training.
Joe always worked hard and was dedicated to every employer he ever had. Joe had a long career with Gandy’s Dairy as a route supervisor, he ended up retiring from there. Since he was not one to sit idle, he went back to work this time with MISD for numerous years.
As hard as Joe worked all his life, he always made plenty of time to spend with his family. He coached little league with all 4 of his kids. Took many long family vacations, more camping trips than you can remember. He enjoyed riding quads in the sand dunes as well as in the mountains. His passion for hunting and training bird dogs took him to many competitions with his dogs. He enjoyed fishing and playing “42” as well. Going to the senior center to take down anyone who wanted to challenge him at the game of “42” was a joy in his life and a great pass time for him.
Joe rarely met a stranger, if he met you and you did not know him you would soon, he was a social butterfly that could start up a conversation with anyone.
Those of you who knew him know that he was a great man that we all loved.
Joe is survived by his son Marshall & wife Nandy Banks of Midland, son Lee & wife Mitzy Banks of McKinney, daughter Jessica & husband Doug Rogers of McKinney, his brother Sam & wife Linda Banks of San Marcos and sister Mary Cooper of Midland as well as sister-in-law Diana Banks of Ballinger. nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.
