Jewel D. Cook was born in Davilla, TX on November 30, 1932, the second of eight children, to Booker T. and Ella B. Williams, who both preceded her in death. She attended Davilla Public Schools and shortly thereafter moved to Midland, TX and was united with Edgar E. Cook, her loving husband of 60 years, who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Cook, along with her late husband, started their life in Midland as proprietors of the “Drug Store”, one of the local hangouts for Carver High School students. She also went on to earn her Associate’s degree in Accounting.She was definitely a “jewel”. She was a genuine gem and served her community in various capacities as a Midland resident. Jewel always enjoyed doing something for someone else. She volunteered her services as a tutor at Casa de Amigos, worked as a hotline volunteer for the Battered Women and Children’s Center, and many other community services.Besides her volunteer work in the community, Jewel was employed at Sunoco (formerly Sun Oil Company) for 21 years. After retirement, she worked as a Wedding Coordinator and Home Interiors representative.In the fall of 1991, she started a second career as an Administrative Assistant at the Southeast Senior Citizen’s Center because it was important for her to give a little of her time helping others.Mrs. Cook united with the Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. H.F. Doyle. She was a member for 67 years and served as the Chairman of the Decorating Committee until she passed the torch. She was also a member of the Gospel Chorus, under the leadership of the late Pastor Emeritus Rev. O.J. Archie and current Rev. Woodrow W. Bailey III.She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Earnestine Williams and Christine Knight (Fred), and a brother, Booker T. Williams, Jr.To cherish her memories she leaves two daughters, Rolanda Cook-Witt of Marietta, Georgia and Karen Cook of Midland, TX; God daughter, Jessica Price and her son, Brenden of Houston, TX. One grandchild, Courtland Cook (Betsy) of Midland, TX and two great grandchildren, Khyston and her “name sake” Landyn Jewel. She is also survived by four sisters; Darlene Burleson (wife of the late Harry Burleson) of Cameron, TX; Dorothy Dickerson (Emmitt) of Mitchellville, Maryland; Wilma Green (wife of the late Dan Green) of Cameron, TX; Alma Smith of Temple, TX and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, extended family members and a host of friends.A Celebration of Life will be at 11:00 am Monday, June 19, 2017 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Woodrow Bailey III officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory in Midland.
