Jerry Michael McCarty, 76, of Midland passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 10:00AM at Westside Church of Christ.Jerry was born on August 15, 1942 to Margie and Herman McCarty in Lamesa, TX.Jerry grew up all over west Texas and eastern New Mexico. His dad was a “doodlebugger” and moving was a way of life. From the age of 6 to 18 he attended 40+ schools. Several times he attended the same schools more than once. As a result Jerry never met a stranger and could get along with just about everyone he met. Jerry loved talking to people. But what made him happiest was helping others. His acts of generosity are legendary. He was never one to talk about anything he did. When he saw or heard about a need he took action and did what he could to help. Jerry had the heart of a servant and tried always to please God by showing his compassion and thankfulness and not letting adversity or disappointment shake his faith. He served in the US Navy and served on the USS Pyro from 1960 to 1964. He later worked for about 20 years in the drilling industry. Most of that time was spent in Grants, NM and later Texas. In 1991 he began working in environmental cleanup and remediation. That work took him all over the United States; most notably Washington DC and Trenton NJ where he participated in the cleanup of the anthrax attacks in the wake of 9/11. He was a Field Project Manager and retired in July of 2011.He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elaine; sons, John, Jason, Joe and his wife, Elizabeth, and his best friend, golf buddy, and cousin Dan McCarty. He is preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association of West Texas or your favorite charity.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
