John Moreland, 94, of Midland, a devoted educator, loving family man, and lifelong learner, died peacefully in Lubbock, TX on January 15, 2025.
Born December 21, 1930, in Fort Worth, Texas to Doris (Bryan) Moreland and Carl Green Moreland, John was raised in Graham, Texas. His passion for knowledge and learning shaped his entire life – from his pursuit of advanced degrees at the University of North Texas and Texas Tech University to his daily ritual of reading newspapers and studying history and the stock market. He remained curious about the world around him, finding joy in traveling to historical sites and exploring new places.
John dedicated nearly four decades to education, serving the Midland Independent School District as both teacher and counselor. He taught at San Jacinto Junior High, Fannin Elementary, and Burnet Elementary, before guiding students as a counselor at Midland High School and Austin Freshman High School (later Lee Freshman High School). After retiring in 1992, he continued his service as president of the Midland Association of Retired School Personnel.
In 1960, John married Shirley Smith in Midland, beginning their greatest adventure together. A natural handyman, John built their life together quite literally – adding a bedroom to their home, maintaining their vehicles, and creating a beautiful yard complete with a garden that produced bountiful harvests of pecans, plums, and tomatoes. Their home became a testament to his craftsmanship and care.
John and Shirley’s love for their family knew no bounds. They traveled countless miles across Texas to support their grandchildren, whether at concert halls, baseball diamonds, or graduation ceremonies. These moments of family celebration were among his most treasured memories.
A man of steadfast faith, John was a dedicated member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and the Keystone Sunday School Class. His commitment to faith, family, and education created a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Doris (Bryan) and Carl Green Moreland, and his brother, Carl Moreland. He is survived by his son, John Russell Moreland (Janella) of Shoreline, WA; daughter, Patricia Hicks (Donnie) of Lubbock, TX; and grandchildren David Hicks (Becca), Katie Hicks (Amanda), and Zenith Bloom (Jackie), and great-granddaughter Heidi Hicks.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on February 1st, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, under the direction of Nalley-Pickle and Welch Funeral Home.
