Jean Cantrell, 87, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, December 8, 2002, in a local nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at the Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel with Dr. Dave Ring, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. She was born on December 28, 1915 in Palatka, Florida and married Clyde Cantrell on December 16, 1945 in Miami, Florida. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1974. Jean lived in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. She worked as a secretary prior to joining the Women's Army Corps in 1942. She was assigned to work as a teletype operator with Headquarters, Third Bombardment Division, 304th Signal Company at Elveden Hall, England. Jean had also worked at Webb Air Force Base as secretary to the Director of the Academic Department. Jean was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Questers Sunday School class, the City Homemakers Extension Club and for a number of years was a member of the Big Spring Music Study Club. Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Jean Perry of Spokane, Washington; two half-brothers, Dayle Parkes of Saratoga, California and John E. Parkes of Silver Spring, Maryland; one half-sister, Frances Podhradsky of San Diego, California; two nephews, Carroll Choate and Sonny Choate both of Big Spring; several great-nieces and nephews; and good friend and caregiver, Lupe Brito of Big Spring. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred Parkes and Douglas F. Parkes. The family suggests memorials to: First United Methodist Church, P.O. Drawer 1229, Big Spring, Texas 79721-1229.
