Jan “Coach” East was born on November 28, 1945 in Center, Texas to Rufus Ermen East and Annie Ruth Presswood. He married Joan Elaine Walker on February 18, 1971 in Garden City, Texas. He attended Stephen F. Austin University and graduated with his Bachelors of Science in 1969. He continued his education at Angelo State University and graduated with his teaching certificate in 1972. Jan taught and coached at Coahoma and Forsan for over 31 years.
Coach is survived by his wife, Elaine East; his sons Todd East and wife Lana, and Stephen East and wife Angela; his grandsons, Nathaniel East, Braden East and Grayson East; his granddaughters, Katie East and Brennan East; his great grandson, Kayden East; his sisters Barbara Guidry and husband Shelby, Liz East and wife Kelly Smith, Debbie LaGrone and husband Killis; his mother in law, who he loved like his mother Faye Walker; and his sister in law, Sandra East.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Ermen East and Annie Ruth Presswood; and his brothers, David East and Jon East.
The family request in lieu of flowers, donations to the Forsan ISD Scholarship Fund in Jan’s name. Donations may be sent to P.O. BOX 689, Forsan, Texas 79733.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

My prayers and condolences go out to your family. I'll always remember Coach East for the lessons he taught on the field and off.

Elaine, Todd, Stephen and family. Carmen and I are saddened with Jan's passing, but we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to know him. Coach East was a great man, teacher and coach. He was definitely a mentor to me and a man I wanted to be like on the field and off. He definitely had an impact on those he touched. What a legacy he leaves to be carried on by a fine family. We are praying for you all!

Coach East was a great coach and helped mold a lot more boys than he could ever imagine! My boys continue to have the utmost respect for our beloved Coach. Thank you East family for sharing this man with all of our boys and for allowing us to love him as a part of our families. I feel your loss Elaine as I lost my beloved Ronnie May 2018. Jan East had a huge influence on the life of my son, Ricky Hope, when he was coaching at Forsan ISD. I will always appreciate the way Jan was the all the kids ... he made each of them feel special and important.

East Family - Our deepest condolences to your family. Coach East was a good man who positively impacted a lot of lives in his years of teaching and coaching. I have so many good memories of him from the classroom, football field, and the locker room. He will be missed by many. Kari and I will keep your family in our prayers. I had the privilege of knowing Jan East from Carthage High School. Although our paths haven't crossed in many many years, I was saddened to hear of his passing. Jan was always nice, polite and there for you. I'm sure from reading the nice comments about Jan, he turned out the be a great teacher and coach. He was an outstanding player !! My condolences to the entire family, and I know he will always RIP. !

My condolences to the family. He was well known in Howard County. Had him as a teacher many years ago at Coahoma. He cared about the students and athletes alike. He definitely left his mark everywhere he went. A true legend. Prayers for the family. Rest In Peace, Coach East.

Coach East was a great coach and a good person. I credit him with a lot of my successes in life as he pushed me to be a better person when he was coaching in Coahoma. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

I remember when he started teaching in Coahoma when I was a student of his. I was so shy about reading in front of people and he would tease me all the time about it and that got me over my shyness! He was a excellent teacher and we all that had him for a teacher will truly miss him! RIP Mr East (Coach East)!
