Jack Leonard Russell from Midland, Texas passed away on December 27, 2010. He was born July 10, 1927 in San Saba, Texas, the fifth of six children to Levi Russell and Maggie Mae Brown. Jack was a 1946 graduate of Ballinger High School. He was awarded a football scholarship to Midwestern State University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. Jack married his childhood sweetheart, Elizabeth Routh on August 11, 1950. He began his career as a football coach in Midland, Texas. Within months, he was called and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Marine Corps from 1950 to 1951. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Midland and began his career in the oil industry working as a roustabout, an oil scout, and a landman for El Paso Natural Gas Company. Jack formed Chaparral Royalty Company where he served as its President. Over the last 52 years, Jack has been known for his entrepreneurial spirit in his ongoing involvement in the oil and gas business.Jack served as a trustee on the board of the Midland Independent School District from 1967 to 1970. He was also appointed by the governor of Texas as a regent for Midwestern State University serving from 1982 to 1988. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen. On any given day at noon, you could regularly find Jack holding court at the round table at the Petroleum Club. Jack's greatest joy was spending time with his family whom he loved dearly. Jack was preceded in death by his mother, father, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Elizabeth, his three daughters Kathy Schmidt and her husband Fred, Debbie Neujahr and her husband Stan and Lana Russell. He was affectionately known as Papaw to seven grandchildren, Byron Schmidt and his wife Sharon, Dawn Tomlin and her husband T.J., Jeni Anderson and her husband John, Amy Anderson and her husband Dave, Keri Neujahr, Emily Berry and her husband Brian and Russell Booth. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, Delaney and Landon Schmidt, Taylor and Tristin Tomlin, and Eliza Berry.A family graveside service is scheduled for 10:00 am at Resthaven Memorial Park to be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am, Thursday, December 30, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church, Midland.
