Howard Doyle Stewart III, 67, of Big Spring, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2021. Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Monday, July 19, 2021 at the First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. He will lie in state from 8:30 AM until 9:00 PM, Saturday, July 17, 2021 and from 1:00 PM until 9:00 PM Sunday, July 18, 2021 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
Howard Doyle Stewart III was born on July 23, 1953 to Howard Doyle Stewart II (Hunka) and Ina Jackson Stewart here in Big Spring. He attended Big Spring High School graduating in 1971 and went straight to Howard County Junior College. He was offered a golf scholarship to play for Odessa College and after graduation another one to play for Hardin Simmons in Abilene. He graduated from Hardin Simmons with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and PE. His first teaching job was back in his hometown of Big Spring, teaching history and coaching golf in 1977. In 1987 he was offered a job with the school district as Transportation Director. He retired in 2007 as Maintenance/Transportation Director with 30 years of service. In 2007 he started working part time at the Big Spring County Club which led to another fulltime job which he left in 2019 to go to full time work at Comanche Trail Golf Course here in Big Spring, which he worked until 2021. During all this he volunteered for the American Cancer Society and the Comanche Trail Festival of Lights and he loved to take long trips on his motorcycle.
Howard married the love of his life Vicki Annen on April 11, 1981 with the golf team playing a big part of the ceremony. They had two children, Michael Quintinn Stewart and Stephanie Stewart Piercefield. Stephanie married Michael Piercefield and has three sons: Maximus Piercefield, Makennen Piercefield and Trooper Harrison. Howard was active in First Baptist Church and did lots of Masonic work. He was a Past Master of Staked Plains Lodge #598 and Past Worthy Patron of Big Spring Eastern Star #67. He was also members of Keystone Chapter 172, Keystone Council 112, Midland Commandery #84, West Texas York Rite College #36, Knight Masons #83, Allied Masonic Degrees #438, Permian Basin Red Cross of Constantine, and the Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest. He even received the Purple Cross Award for his contribution to the York Rite bodies in 2015. He was not only a member but was head of each of these bodies at one time or another and attended all the meetings regularly. He also received Man of the Year in Big Spring in 2013.
In addition to his children, he is also survived by one brother, Jimmy Stewart.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents and wife and one grandson Howard Rex Harrison.
