Harold Logan

Harold L. Logan, 89, of Midland, Texas passed peacefully in his sleep on April 16, 2025.  He was born in Lynchburg, Tennessee to Sam and Marguerite Logan.  Harold moved with his family to Midland when he was 6 years old, graduating twelve years later in 1954 from Midland High School. A participant in FFA, he had the grand champion pig in 1953.  While serving his country for several years in the U.S. Army Reserves, he married Lajuan Caraway in 1955. The couple moved to Phoenix, where son Dale was born, and Harold worked as a carpenter. In 1964, the family moved to Abilene, birthplace of daughter Tracy, where Harold worked for Monroe Business Machines. When the opportunity arose for Harold to work with his father at the family Chevron station, the whole gang moved back to Midland in 1973.  Ole Weird Harold’s Chevron served Midland until 2003, trading with cowboys, farmers, oilmen and all types of working folks across the Southside. He ran a full-service station, washing windows, checking tires and fluids, changing oil, fixing flats, washing cars and doing light mechanic work.  Harold was a friend to everyone he met, delivering customer’s vehicles all over town and allowing folks who couldn’t pay until later to “sign a ticket.” He shared a handful of bubble gum, and free bicycle tire air with every little kid that came along.  Fritz, his Rottweiler, was a steady companion at the station, best known for eating pork rinds and drinking from the water fountain.

Harold married Linda Stewart Smith in September 1992.  They enjoyed 32 years of antiquing, road tripping, and looking for treasures between Tennessee and Texas, often accompanied by cousins Mary Ruth Simmons, Mark Logan and his wife Cynthia. Despite Harold and Mark being 20 years apart, they were best buddies and enjoyed life. Harold, Linda and his cousins traveled to bucket list destinations across the country and shared many great adventures.

After selling the service station in 2003, Harold grew tired of retirement and went to work as a “Boll Weevil Ranger” in Martin County. He cherished the relationships he built with farmers all across West Texas. In 2005, he took a job with Greenwood ISD, joining Linda, where he worked in the Maintenance and Transportation Departments for 12 years. He deeply enjoyed his work and developed lifelong friendships during this time.

Harold loved all athletics.  He coached little league, helped build soap box derby cars with his son, and attended numerous dance recitals and livestock shows with his daughter.  As a younger man he was a referee and umpire for football, basketball, and baseball games across the state. And he remained a passionate sports fan for his entire life, especially of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns, going so far as to have Bucky print out Cowboy’s rosters for him to cuss and discuss changes each week.

Since retirement #3, Harold and Linda have been avid gardeners raising squash, black-eyed peas, tomatoes, onions, okra, pumpkins and beans to share with folks all over Midland County.  Harold shared his harvest with friends, family, doctors, Optimus PT employees, and the “old people” at the Senior Citizens Center who were younger than he was.  On the morning of his death, he tended his garden in hopes of discouraging the grackles from eating his newly sprouted crops.

Harold was preceded in death by his mother, father and his first wife Lajuan, as well as his beloved dogs, Fritz, Katy, and Buster. He is survived by his wife Linda, son Dale of Midland, and daughter Tracy (Lee) of Azle; step children, Stephanie Alsup (Mark) of Corpus Christi, Wendy Smith of Lago Vista, Bucky Smith (Donya) of Midland; grandchildren Jalen Smith, Kendall Alsup, Parker Alsup, Slayde Smith, Sloane Smith and Campbell Alsup; sister Bobbie Trent (Walter) of Seal Beach, CA; nieces Gerry, Gail, and Gay of California, nephew Thad of Arizona, and Maddie, his dog. He will also be missed greatly by his extended family in the hills and hollers of Tennessee.

A memorial service at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 2:00 pm.
