Gregory Smith

August 23, 1954 - December 18, 2020

Gregory M. Smith, 66, of Big Spring died Friday December 18, 2020.  Private family services will be held at a later date.  He was born in Gadsden, Alabama on August 23, 1954.  He married Rose Sturm Smith on July 30, 1983.  He was a retired RN spending most of career employed at Medical Arts Hospital in Lamesa.  He loved the Atlanta Braves baseball team and going down to the coast to fish. His hobby was collecting baseball cards.

Greg is survived by his wife Rose Smith of Big Spring; his sons, Bradley Smith and wife Shannon, and their children, Wyatt Sullivan Smith and Courtnie Smith of Midland, Texas; Christopher Smith and wife Ashley and their children Blake Smith, Devyn Smith and Emery Smith of Tyler, Texas; Nathaniel M. Smith of Columbus, Ohio; his brother, Gary Smith of Gadsden, Alabama; and his two sisters Jenny Spencer of Orange Beach, Alabama and Janice Smith of Panama City Beach, Florida.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hoke Jackson Smith and Jessie Mae Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to SPCA at give.spca.org or to the local Food Bank.

Greg introduced me to the "Rocks" in Gadsden Al., climbing under Noculula Falls and Glen Tolbert, a mean flat pick guitarist who played at Horse Pens Forty on Sand Mountain. But the most notable memory of Greg is a fishing trip to Moss Creek Lake. Hot - windy. Good fishing - awful catching. Greg happened to fall into a prickly pear cactus on this fishing trip. Now if you know Greg like I knew Greg you know nothing came between his jeans and his derriere. Well, he fell back first into that prickly pear cactus. What friends will do for friends. I sat on a rock while Greg squatted in front of me, pulling out thorns with a fisherman's pliers. Thanks that this was years before iphone cameras as it would have been quite a picture...... oh and the other thing Greg introduced me to was Carolyn. Godspeed Greg.
