Gorman Lynn Wiseman passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024, in Midland, TX. He was born in Fort Worth on May 1, 1933, the youngest son of Don Houston & Lillian Spears Wiseman. He graduated from Texas Christian University with a teaching degree where he played basketball for the three-time Southwest Conference Champion Horned Frogs. There he met the love of his life, cheerleader and TCU sweetheart Peggy June Dyche from Fort Stockton, TX. They married on August 7, 1954, at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Stockton. They began their life together in Germany where Gorman served with the US Army occupational forces as a First Lieutenant. Post service, they settled in Texas where they brought up two sons and a daughter.
Gorman’s first business effort in Fort Stockton was in commodities storage, storing grains and cotton. He also invested in a chicken farm and for several years, the families of Pecos County enjoyed fresh eggs courtesy of the Wiseman’s Best Egg Farm. In 1975, Gorman became the High School Vocational Teacher where he found students various working opportunities and then inspired them to enter National Vocational conferences. While a teacher, he became a licensed real estate agent and worked with Century 21, Armstrong & Associates.
Gorman and Peggy were active members of First Presbyterian Church and were involved in numerous ministries of the church. He was ordained a Deacon and Elder and, unless traveling, he would have been seen in the pews there every Sunday. While their children were involved in church and school activities, Gorman served as a coach, scoutmaster, and youth leader where he also influenced their friends and classmates. He was active in civic affairs, including multiple terms as a City Councilman, and involvement in the Jaycees and Rotary Club. He is the only person who has been honored twice as Fort Stockton’s Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.
After retiring, they traveled the world, visiting the homes of their oldest son and daughter multiple times. They moved to Denton in 2008 and were active members of St Andrews Presbyterian, becoming involved in the church’s bereavement ministry. They recently moved to Midland and resided first at Polo Park Estates and most recently at Manor Park.
Gorman is best remembered as gracious, accepting, caring, and an attentive listener. Many mentioned he was like a second Dad to them, from former students to classmates of Gary, Dubby, and Dianna. He could recall details and stories that people shared with him, many times following up on how things were going. He was as kind as he was tall, and to know him was to look up to him.
Gorman is survived by his wife Peggy who resides at Manor Park in Midland, son Gary Wiseman (Earl) of Kailua, HI, son Douglas “Dubby” Wiseman (Pam) of Midland, and daughter Dianna Pratt (Devin) of Tel Aviv, Israel. They have four grandchildren, Dagan Pratt (Devin Rose), Kalli Martin (Ben), Cutter Wiseman (Alyssa), and Dominique Pratt, and seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gorman is preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers, John, Leon, and Billy, and sister Jenelle.
The family of Gorman Wiseman wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Manor Park, Midland who were tremendously helpful in Gorman’s five years of residency there.
A service of the Witness to the Resurrection in memory of Gorman will be held on Monday, December 30 at 11 AM at First Presbyterian in Fort Stockton. Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to First Presbyterian Church or other charities in his name are suggested.
