Gladys “Mammon” Shortes was born 10/11/29, we think. You see, the courthouse that housed her birth records burned down, and they asked her to fill out her own replacement birth certificate.
But some time or another, she was born in Wetumpka, AL to WF Kenney and Josephine Nixon Kenney. She was their 10th child of 12, with 9 brothers and 2 sisters. She danced into the arms of her Savior on February 24, 2023 at the age of 93. (we think)
Her family where farm hands in south central Alabama where she attended various primary schools and graduated from Tallassee High School in Tallassee, AL.
After high school she went to work at a spinning mill in Wetumpka, and then traveled the world as a civilian with the Air Force. She especially loved North Africa, the Philippines, and Germany.
Our Mammon wore many hats throughout her long and beautiful life. She was a talented artist, painting and drawing and sewing. She could make anything from a pair of socks to a wedding dress with detailed bead work and hand embroidery. She had a way with animals, they almost instinctively trusted her sweet nature. She was like a living Disney princess, taking a walk out on the property to pet the deer, feed the birds or watch the squirrels scamper around her. She was a farmers wife, secretary for the family crop insurance agency, a jewelry maker, a nurse aid, but most importantly, she was our foundation, our advisor, and someone we knew we could depend on.
Mammon loved the Lord every day of her life. She taught her children, her grandchildren and then her great grandchildren what a friend we have in Jesus and to trust in Him when all seems lost.
Left to carry on her memory is her brother, Ralph Kenney; daughter, Debra Rademacher; her grandchildren: James Schumpert and wife Kori, Heath Wright, Brianna O’Donnell and Zakariah Rademacher; and her “greats” Dylan, Kayden, Melina, Wyatt, Madalyn, Avery and Daniella.
Welcoming her into Heaven everlasting are her parents, 8 brothers, 2 sisters, daughter Tonya Watkins, and many of her dear friends and family she’s missed for many years.
Rest now Mammon, we miss you.
