Choate, Gladys, 93, of Big Spring, died on Saturday, February 10, 2001, in a local hospital. Graveside funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Monday, February 12, 2001, at Mt. Olive Memorial Park with Dr. Ed Williamson, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Gladys was born December 10, 1907 to Put and Mae Cantrell, a pioneer family of Howard County. Put and Mae moved to the Centerpoint Community in a covered wagon in 1902 from Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Gladys married Melvin Choate on July 21, 1926 in Howard County. She belonged to the Phythian Lodge and was a homemaker. During the 1940 and 1950 era, Melvin and Gladys traveled with the Howard County 4H Club, which Melvin drove all over Texas and the United States transporting the 4H Club calves to stock shows. Gladys helped look after the 4H kids and prepared many a meal for them from her chuckbox in the back of the truck. Gladys and Melvin loved to square dance on horseback and participated in the rodeo parades and in the grand entries. She also rode her horse sidesaddle for the Centennial in 1949. During the Great Depression her home was North on the Lamesa highway. Many people were unemployed and she was always willing to share what she had, and she fed many meals to unemployed people walking the highway. She was always smiling and happy and loved to see her many friends and relatives.,
