George McDalton Thomas, 92, of Midland, Texas passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Mack was born on January 21, 1932 in Huntsville, Texas to Ida Viola and Mackie Thomas. He attended Abilene Christian College and graduated in 1954. After graduation he began what became his life’s career in the furniture business. He met Shirley Thompson of Dallas and they were married June 5, 1959. They moved to Midland and began a 65-year adventure. Mack worked for Knorr Furniture and then opened Mack Thomas Interiors. Every piece of furniture he sold came with a story and a piece of advice. He loved to travel and his trips all around the world were woven into many of his interior design projects. Besides travel, his other favorite pastime was restoring a 1902 house in Cloudcroft, New Mexico that he named “The Summer Palace”. This is where many wonderful times were had and memories made with family and friends.
Mack and Shirley were founding members of Golf Course Road Church of Christ, where Mack took on many leadership positions. Later he was an active member of Fairmont Park Church of Christ. Both churches were an important part of his life.
Mack is survived by his wonderful wife of 65 years Shirley L. Thomas, daughter Trayce Thomas Carr and her husband Jeff Carr, son Dr. Timothy C. Thomas and his wife Virginia Thomas, grandchildren Will and J.T. Carr, and Lily and Drew Thomas, and nieces and nephews.
Mack is preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Luther Ray and Sue Thomas.
The family would like to express their heart felt gratitude to their church family at Fairmont Park Church of Christ and the amazing staff of nurses and caregivers at Gentiva Hospice.
