George Fletcher Malaise, 76 of Midland, Texas passed away on March 2, 2023. The family will receive guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 7 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel, with interment following at Resthaven Memorial Park.
George was born on November 22, 1946 in McNary, Arizona. His parents were Tom O. Malaise and Liddie Malaise of Odessa, Texas. He attended Permian High School where he graduated in 1966 and soon afterwards joined the Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam War and was stationed overseas as a helicopter mechanic/crew chief. After he returned, he married his wife of 51 years, Rebecca on January 8, 1972, and went to work for his father’s casing business while attending Odessa College. Being the very independent and outspoken man he was, he butted heads with his father, leaving the company and going into sales for a local hydraulic power tong manufacturer. He continued in the same line of work for Farr Power Tongs moving to Houston and traveling the country where he met many friends. After the oil crash in the 80’s he started his own business GM Tool Co. where he bought and sold tubular handling equipment all over the world and was very successful, even spending some months in Nigeria working with a local casing company in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. In 2009, George bought PBA Supply in Odessa, Texas which was a local machine shop and supply company for the oil and gas industry and in 2014 founded and opened US Power Tong. This division of the company would design, engineer, and manufacture an industry changing hydraulic power tong that is still on the cutting edge of the industry today. His favorite hobby was spending time with his two grandchildren and spoiling them to no end. If you were fortunate enough to spend any time with him you would quickly learn that he had absolutely no filter and would say whatever was on his mind, without hesitation. His laughter was truly unique and absolutely infectious. He had a stern side to him but if you truly knew him well, you knew he was one of the kindest and most giving individuals you could ever come across. Regardless of whether you liked him or not, he was the type of man that commanded respect to everyone he was around not because he expected it, but simply for his honesty and his straightforward personality. He enjoyed following Texas A&M football and regularly attended home games in College Station, as well as tailgating for most every home game. From the time his son was 4 years old, he followed his son’s soccer career wherever that led to, which most of the time meant driving to Dallas every weekend to play. You could always hear him at every high school game laughing or yelling in the crowd, even from the field.
George is survived by his wife Rebecca Malaise, his son Spencer Malaise wife Elizabeth Malaise, grandchildren Brooklyn Malaise and Savannah Malaise; also, sister Anna Moore and husband Howard, brother Tom Malaise, Jr. and wife JoAnn, sister Bit Moore and husband Dennis Etheredge, sister Mary Jo Toomire, sister-in-law Kathy Hearn and husband Jerry Hearn, and brother-in-law Joseph Smith.
