Frances Jane Smith, 80, of Midland, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020.

Frances was born on January 31, 1940 to Ethel and Coy Cavitt in Stamford, TX. A lifelong Midland High School Bulldog, she was extremely proud of her 30+ year career at her alma mater and school district. She was active and filled with energy for most of her life, always on the move and ready to go somewhere and do something., whether it be around town or going on longer adventures. She looked forward every year to spending time at the beach in Anna Maria Island, Florida where she loved renting a bike and riding to the little shops around town. We will always think of her when enjoying soft serve ice cream at Sonic or Chik- fil-A or drinking a coke, two of her favorite treats.

We will remember Frances as someone who celebrated life well. She celebrated her marriage well. She and Jimmy were married over 61 years and not a day passed that she didn’t brag about her love and adoration for Jim. He was her hero. She celebrated holidays well, especially Christmas and the Fourth of July. Her love for these days overflowed into her home decor, wardrobe, and paper goods. She created a home where we could celebrate well. Around breakfasts of pancakes with her homemade syrup, an annual singing of the twelve days of Christmas, and lots of laughter, she wanted her family to have space to celebrate together. Most importantly she poured her heart into making sure those around her felt celebrated. She carefully selected her cards, words, and gifts to ensure that those she cared for felt special during the important milestones and celebrations of their lives. We know that if you had the joy of knowing her you had the privilege of being celebrated by her.

We are most proud of the fact that she was a faithful follower of Jesus. Discipled from a young age by her father she continued in her love for the Lord and his word throughout her life. We are grateful the family tradition of discipleship was carried on through her dedication to raising children who also love Jesus, who have also passed this on to her grandchildren. A longtime member of Main Street Church of Christ, her church family was important to her and she found joy in connecting with anyone who entered the church doors, she especially loved doting on babies and young children on Sunday mornings.

While we will miss our wife, mother, and grandmother dearly, her belief in Jesus leaves us assured of her eternal life with him.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Jimmy Smith; Her three children Phillip (Mary), Teri (Mike) Foulds, and Scott (Janet). She had 7 grandchildren: Reagan, Landry (Jamie), Sutton, Sawyer, Brock, Addison, and Sloan, who all, plus a few others who called her Granny. Frances is also survived by her younger brother David Cavitt, younger sister Cherry (EJ) Matchus, and sister-in-law Faye Cantrell. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Coy and Ethel Cavitt and several beloved aunts and uncles.

Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, December 28, 2020 at 11:00AM at Downtown Church of Christ. The family is requiring mask to attend and all social distancing guidelines will be strictly maintained.

Dear Frances was a wonderful, sweet friend who treated everyone wuth kindness. I will always remenber her smile and laugh. Loving wishes to Jim and David and Cherry from David and Diane Wright

Frances was such an important person at Midland High School; she kept all the standardized tests in order with each test site equipped with the necessary supplies for student success. She was the go-to person whenever you had a problem with classes, records, grades, or anything that helped the school run smoothly. Not only was she grease to help the mechanics of education run smoothly, she was a dear, dear friend to everyone. In spite of the kinks we sometimes placed in those educational wheels, with a smile, she would manage to help us work them out. I was usually one of the early birds to arrive, but never before Frances. She was also still in her office when I would leave late in the day. I was a teacher who liked to have all things ready for the next day before I left, and apparently Frances did too because she would be there getting things ready for her next day too. She always had a good word to say about anyone. Even if you messed up, she would have a kind word to make you feel better. After retirement, we lost contact, but I will always cherish the years we worked together. At the funeral today, I wanted to make contact with Jim, but I didn't see him outside as I left the building. I appreciated him and the very apparent care and concern he had for her. May God bless the Smiths as they deal with the physical loss of a very dear person , and may they rejoice that she is in the presence of the Savior.

Francis was a sweet sweet lady who has shown us all how to live and follow Jesus. Miss you my sweet friend, till we meet again.

How I loved visiting Aunt Frances and Uncle Jim when I was a little kid and as I grew older. First, we were always so welcome--both were so happy to have us and you could feel that. Whether playing in Teri or Scott's rooms, or hanging out in the immaculate kitchen--where there was always something good to eat, I enjoyed being in a loving home. Later, as an adult, I enjoyed visiting, usually with my mom and Aunt Frances. What great memories of love. I will miss Aunt Frances and her love for all around her.

Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Frances bestowed a special warmth and love. Her strong demonstration of faith made a lasting impact in my life. She blessed and taught us well. In gratitude and with love and prayers...

Garland & I were deeply blessed that Shug & Pat shared their very special friends-Jim & Frances with us. We shared many good times and sad times with each other. Frances was one of the most loving and caring people I know who loved the Lord and set a Christian example for all who knew her.

Aunt Frances was a true blessing to everyone. She made everyone she knew feel so special. I know all of you will miss her so much, I sure will. We are praying that you feel God’s loving arms surrounding you during all of this. Love you dearly.

I remember Frances always smiling and making me feel special. Although it was many years ago (1968-1973, and few short visits over the years) she was an inspiration to me. May God bless the family with warm memories.

Frances was the sweetest, most caring and giving person I’ve ever known. She always put others before herself. We have laughed and cried and shared each other’s joys and sorrows. Thank you for being in my life and my very special friend. I am going to miss you, but I know you are in God’s hands and will be reunited with your loved ones in heaven. I love you. Pat Bowlin

I am so sorry to hear about Frances’s passing but I’m comforted knowing she woke in the presence of Jesus & is basking in his glory, joy & perfect peace.

Aunt Frances will certainly be missed by our family! From the moment she married Uncle Jim, she became the aunt always bearing gifts! She loved gift giving and we always enjoyed being the recipients of her generosity! We loved hearing her stories! She told us of all the pranks Phillip, Terri and Scott played on her (I especially enjoyed the Christmas antlers!) and even though she pretended to be upset, she thoroughly enjoyed those pranks and loved all three children dearly! She was such a fine Christian lady, wife , mother, grandmother and aunt! She will truly be missed by the Smith family!
