Fay Marie Kilgore Hughes passed away peacefully on May 5, 2022. Born February 4, 1923, she was 99 years old. Marie was born in Cleburne, Texas to Grady Webster Kilgore and Myrtle Horton Kilgore.
On May 2, 1942, Marie married the love of her life, John William Hughes. They eloped while she was a senior at Big Spring High School. After she graduated they moved to Lubbock, Texas where John served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. While John was stationed on Biak Island, Marie moved back to Big Spring where she gave birth to her son John Carol in November 1944. When her husband returned at the end of the war, they welcomed their two daughters, Sandra and Evelyn.
The family lived in Big Spring until 1957, then moved to Andrews, Texas. Returning to Big Spring in 1963, they opened Hughes Optical. Marie was an excellent gardener and loved working in her yard. She was a wonderful cook and loved her family. She was an active member of Airport Baptist Church, then First Baptist Church after Airport closed.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her grandson Kelley Woods, six of her seven siblings, her daughter-in-law Marsha Hughes and her son-in-law Marvie Wheeler.
She is survived by her brother Dr. J. Gale Kilgore, her son John, her daughters Sandra Woods and Evelyn Wheeler, seven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 2pm until 4pm Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, May 9, 2022 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
