Father Charles P. Vogel passed through the door of death February 10th. Father Vogel, is survived by his sister, Virginia Kathryn Doherty of Fairfield, Connecticut. Father is the son of Charles Paul and Katherine (Klein) Vogel who was born in Ridgewood, NY on March 14, 1917. He was ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Brooklyn, NY on April 27, 1943. One of the Altar boys serving Father Vogel's First Mass was a young man Robert Kelly who later became a priest and was Pastor of St. Stephen's in Midland, Texas. Father Vogel served the Brooklyn parishes of Transfiguration, Saint Leo and Saint Sylvester. He retired in 1984. After Father retired he began coming to Midland whenever Father Kelly needed extra help or had to be away. Fr. Vogel came to stay for several months during two despairing times. One long visit came while Fr. Kelly recuperated from surgery and eventually for health reasons had to retire. Another time came with the untimely death of Fr. John Waldron, Father Kelly's successor. Bishop Pfeifer asked Fr. Vogel to stay for six months till Father James P. Bridges could be assigned as the new pastor of St. Stephen's. Father Bridges urged Fr. Vogel to continue his pastoral ministry among the people of St. Stephen's. He began spending half of his time helping priest friends in Brooklyn and the other half at St. Stephen's. Father's traditional and deeply conservative values as well as his primary focus on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Mother of Jesus fit the people of St. Stephen's very well. He was a strong advocate for the unborn. Father loved fishing and boating. Three years ago Father suffered a disabling stroke. This limited his ministry greatly but the people of St. Stephen's considered him to be no less than a holy man bringing great blessings to the parish by simply spending his last years in their midst. May he rest in peace! His Rosary Service will be held at St. Stephen's on Thursday evening at 7:00. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday morning at 10:30 with Bishop Michael Pfeifer officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 4601 Neely Ave., Midland, Texas 79707. Father Vogel performed mine and my husband's wedding 11/23/1980. Loved him and his gold volkswagen...:) On a sour note...he would never say....You may now kiss your bride He didn't believe in that. So no new brides and grooms kissed on the altar with his blessing...LOL. My husband I and walked halfway, stopped, and then kissed down the aisle...:) Fr vogel was good with that..LOL
