Evelyn Stallings Adkins, 92, of Stanton, died Sunday, July 2, 2017 in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Stanton. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton.She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Stanton. Evelyn was the Proverbs 31 women. She was born August 28, 1924 in Lomax, Texas, which was named for her grandfather. She attended school in Lomax. In 1937 she meet Lawrence Adkins while visiting her aunt at West Texas A&M. She graduated as the Stanton High School valedictorian in the class of 1940. She attended McMurray College for two years and went to Southern Methodist University for a year. She was about 30 hours shy of her accounting degree when she married Lawrence Adkins during World War 2. They married April 10, 1943 in Yakima, Washington. He preceded her in death March 17, 2005. Lawrence was sent overseas with the 96th Infantry Division for sixteen months. Evelyn went home to await the birth of their first son Larry Adkins. After serving our country they started farming in Lomax in 1946. They went on to have four other children Bob, David, Mollie and Dee Dee. Their lives centered around family, church and community. She was involved in leading 4H, football, band and F.F.A. She taught Sunday School, was the church pianist and served on various committees at church.Evelyn is survived by two sons; Robert L. Adkins and wife, Deborah of Lubbock and David M. Adkins of Odessa; two daughters, Mollie Madison and husband, Jack of Stanton and Dee Dee Colwell and husband, Barry of Marysville, Washington; daughter-in-law, Lila Adkins of Big Spring; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; two brothers, Jimmy Stallings of Stanton and Louis Stallings and wife, Luan of Big Spring.In addition to her husband she is preceded in death by her parents, and a son, Larry Adkins.Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbreath Funeral Home.
