Evelyn Lucille Cowley was born on March 3, 1926 to Garrett and Edna Monroney in Casey, Illinois, the youngest of three children. During the tough economic times a few years later, Mr. Monroney heard of the oil boom in Texas and moved his family there. After several moves, the Monroneys settled in the boomtown of Forsan, Texas. Evelyn was tragically stricken with polio when she was 18 years old, and would eventually lose the use of her legs and a significant portion of her upper body strength for life.
