Evangelina Reyes Garibay gently passed away in the early morning of Friday, July 9, 2021 at 78 years old beside her husband of 60 years. She was lovingly known as “Vangie” by friends and family, “Mom” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but most importantly, she was endearingly nicknamed “Chicken” by her “viejo”. Following a long battle with dementia as well as stage 4 kidney disease and after surviving breast cancer and a stroke, Evangelina is now free of her suffering.
Born in Midland, Texas to her parents, Clyde and Matilde Reyes, she was raised on Catholic values and learning to work smarter. Forever a Bulldog, Evangelina graduated from Midland High School in 1961. She loved to serve her community as a lifetime member of the Ben Milam Elementary School PTA, both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, a volunteer teacher, and served the Midland community as a volunteer Election Worker for about 10 years. She was a dedicated member of the Guadalupana Ministry and Cursista at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church & Shrine in Midland and attended this same community church her whole life with deep admiration and unyielding faith. The Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys were her #1 teams but she’ll forever be a Mahom’s fan nonetheless! She was a hugger and a kisser with a heart the size of Texas. Independence Day was a big deal in the Garibay home full of red, white and blue. Dancing and laughing were her favorite things to do.
Evangelina is survived by her husband, Walter Flores Garibay, Sr. and their children: Walter Flores Garibay, Jr. and his wife Janie; Carolina Garibay Garza and her husband John (pallbearer); Sandra Garibay; and her step-son Erick Rivas. Special to her heart, Yolanda Gutierrez and Raul Flores, became part of the family and were raised by Walter and Evangelina. Grandchildren include Erica Nicole Carrasco and her husband Stephen (pallbearer), Amanda Aranda and her husband Jose (pallbearer), Walter Garibay III (pallbearer) and his fiance Ita Martinez, Elizabeth Sifuentez and her husband Eric (pallbearer), Christine Marie Sanchez and her husband Larry (pallbearer), Daniel Bonilla (pallbearer), Johnny Santana Garza (pallbearer), Joseph Anthony Garcia (pallbearer) and his wife Nedra, and Marina Garza and her fiance Jesus Barocio (pallbearer). Great-grandchildren include Marissa Annalyse Carrasco, Noah Jacob Carrasco, Zachary Elija Aranda, Aaron Seth Aranda, Alayna Nevaeh Garibay, Larry Sanchez Jr., Lauren Sanchez, Max Sanchez, Annalise Sophia Barocio, Ariana Grace Garcia, Brady Sanchez, Uriah Anthony Garcia, Annabelle Garza, Leonardo Jesus Barocio, and Victoria Love Sifuentez. She is also survived by her brothers: Rosendo Reyes, David Reyes, Ruben Reyes and Roy Reyes. Evangelina has numerous nieces and nephews that she considered her own.
She is preceded in death by her unborn son Jaime Garibay; her parents Clyde and Matilde Reyes; her brother Jerry Reyes; her sisters Dora Sue and Vicenta Reyes; her grandmother Carmen Martinez; and her great-grandson David Austin Garibay.
The family would like to recognize Dorothy Reyes, Scotty R. Ortega, M.D., Ashton Medical Lodge, and all the amazing nurses and staff that cared for her. In such a short time, Evangelina made friends at Ashton and in turn they made lasting impressions on the family.
