Edward Russell Kohanek, 94, of Big Spring, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024. He will lie in state Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 8am-9pm at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Graveside services will held at 10:00 am, Friday, August 9, 2024 at Mount Olive Memorial Park Chapel.
Edward was born July 1, 1930 in Big Spring, Texas to parents Etta Mae (Odom) and Walter J. Kohanek. He grew up in Big Spring and entered the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Jennie Florine (Cass) September 7, 1951 at the First Christian Church in Big Spring. They lived in Big Spring until 1977 when they moved to Shallowater, Texas. While in Lubbock, he played in the Senior Softball League. Edward loved the Dallas Cowboys, football, and racing with the grandchildren. He worked as a Camp Host at Blanco State Park for many years. He enjoyed travelling, fishing and camping. His favorite past time was drinking coffee. He had been active in the First Christian Church, singing in the choir and also helped with maintenance.
Edward is survived by three daughters: Diana Best (Jo); Jennie Tindol (Tim), and Jennifer Thurman (Curtis); two sons: Steve Kohanek (Waynette) and Keith Kohanek (Teresa); 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife Jennie Florine (Cass) Kohanek; sons: David Kohanek and infant Bryan Kohanek; one brother Clifton Ames and his parents.
