Durward 'Smitty' Smith, 80, died on January 21, 2009 at Midland Memorial Hospice Inpatient Unit. The family will receive friends at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, January 22, 2009 between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Funeral services have been scheduled for Friday, January 23, 2009 at 10:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Andy Hill officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.Smitty was born October 9, 1928 in Mitchell County, Texas to Curtis and Ollie Belle Smith. In 1947 Smitty graduated from Courtney School in Martin County and then went on to study mapping in Alexandria, Virginia. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Tokyo for three years in the mapping division. After the war he returned to Midland where he spent the next forty-five years working for Gulf/Chevron Oil. In February of 1953, he married the love of his life, Maxine Eckert. He loved hunting and fishing.Survivors include his wife Maxine Smith of Midland; one son, Mike Smith and his wife Pam of Midland; daughter, Monique Ruthberg and her husband Joe of Midland; brother, J.W. Smith of Houston; sister-n-law, Carole Smith of Carlsbad, CA; brother-n-law, Gus 'Sonny' Eckert of Midland; grandchildren, Hunter Smith, Casey and Tanner Smith and their mother Sabrina Edwards, Brandon Prather, Patrick Prather, Mallory White, Jacob Parker and his wife Kezia, Marah Parker and Lucas Ruthberg; great-grandchildren, Aliza, Arianna and Abby Gale. He is also survived by a very special cousin, Jody Barton of Clovis, CA and an aunt, Ruth Bolin of Saledo, TX.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
