January 19, 2022 our lives became a bit less colorful, a tad less fun and a great deal sadder. Family and friends regretfully announce our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother Daniel “Sonny” E. Hughes passed away peacefully at home in Midland, Texas. Daniel was born June 28, 1956 in Fort Stockton, Texas to Albert E. Hughes and Murriel Ann Hughes.
He grew up in Barstow where at a very young age he began building, racing and crashing a variety of vehicles. Driving along the backroads and back and forth to Pecos put him on the path to become a regular at Penwell Raceway years later. While Grandma was determined to raise him in the church, he was equally determined to raise Hell. When not in church or wreaking havoc in the streets he also enjoyed tormenting his siblings.
Daniel was married once to Suzanne Turner on November 22, 1978 in Midland, Texas. After 17 years of marriage, they remained loving friends. They shared two daughters Cody and Mandy.
Daniel never came across an engine he couldn’t fix, a vehicle he couldn’t drive, a job he couldn’t do or a dog he didn’t love. He was a hard workin, motorcycle ridin, beer drinkin, hot rod buyin, Whataburger lovin, good ole country boy. He thought himself a bull rider destined for the PBR, dynamic on the dancefloor and the King of karaoke.
Daniel’s dream from a young age was to own and operate his own big rig. He accomplished his dream when he bought a Peterbilt truck and trailer. Although it didn’t shine as much as he liked, thanks to the West Texas caliche, he was so proud of that red truck. One thing is for sure, anyone who knew Daniel would tell you he was the hardest working man they’d ever known. He worked hard until his last day. We are grieved by his passing but so blessed to have shared his life.
Daniel was preceded in death by his grandparents, Louise and Murrah Cranfill; his father Albert E. Hughes; his mother Ann Shaw; his brother Steven Hughes and his niece Cristi Ann Cox. He is survived and missed by his sister Debra Hughes Diehl and husband Ray of Corpus Christi; his brothers, Bobby Edge and Jesse Hughes; daughter Cody Peck and husband Eric; daughter Mandy Hughes Hendrix and husband John; grandchildren, Colton Howell, Dillon Suggs, Hayden Hughes and Hannah Hendrix; great-grandchildren, Caylin Howell and Noah Howell all of Midland; niece Misti Cox Link and husband Scott of Germany and extended family spanning West Texas to Florida.
Daniel wished to spend his retired days in the mountains, therefore his ashes will be spread in Colorado at a later date.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
