Cruz was born in Mexico on May 3, 1945, to father Benancio Esquivel and mother Manuela Esquivel. Having 12 siblings, Cruz didn’t have the opportunity for much formal education. At an early age, he helped his family raise farm animals and worked odd jobs. His strong work ethic and deep desire to expand his love for ranching led him to the United States. He arrived in the Midland area in 1962 where he began his early career doing what he loved. Cruz worked at the Tompkins family ranch as well as the Campbell Cattle ranch. Cruz excelled in his abilities to the point he was soon managing ranch and livestock operations. Having met and married the love of his life as well as the birth of their earliest children, Cruz and Ninfa soon moved into town to raise their family.
Ultimately, Cruz found his new career as an employee of the City of Midland where he retired after 25 years. After retirement, Cruz returned to his passion at the Campbell ranch where he assumed ranch and farming operations. Although he had daily tasks, he spent his final years exchanging stories about children and grandchildren alongside his dearest friend and ranch owner, Mr. John Campbell. Cruz and John were inseparable until John’s death in 2019.
Besides his wife Ninfa, Cruz is survived by his three sons and two daughters Jamie and Cruz Jr. of San Antonio, Luis, Gaby and Ana of Midland; his grandchildren, Jaime II, Lindsey, Julie, Danielle, Mason, Gavin, Sofia, Cruz III, Caiden, Calista, Seth, Nathanial, and Luna; Five siblings as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
