Charlstie Rachel Culbertson passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022 in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the age of 87. A visitation will begin at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 20, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory in Midland, Texas. Graveside services have been scheduled for 9:00 am on Monday, February 21 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, Texas.
Charlstie is remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was married to Jim Culbertson for 57 years until his passing in 2013. They spent many years traveling together in their retirement. Charlstie grew up in west Texas and eastern New Mexico with her mother Rachel Lackey, father Charles Lackey, brother Jack and sister Orlean. After graduating from high school in Lovington, New Mexico she attended Texas Tech College in Lubbock, Texas where she met her future husband Jim. They were married in 1956 and raised three boys. They moved around the country while Jim worked for Halliburton Services. She loved to volunteer at Midland Memorial Hospital to exercise her passion for taking care of people. She was also an avid golfer, winning the Green Tree Club championship twice. Later in life she and Jim enjoyed playing poker and she became an accomplished Texas hold ’em and Omaha player.
She is remembered for her infectious smile and generous spirit, always bringing joy to those around her. She was available at the drop of a hat to help both family members and strangers when in times of pain or need. Later in life she served as a caregiver for her husband Jim, helping him through his last years as he battled Alzheimer’s disease. Despite being struck with the same disease, she was the bright spark of the assisted living center, bringing light and laughter to those similarly afflicted. Also, her great singing voice resonated during the karaoke sessions at the center!
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim of 57 years in 2013, her mother Julia Lackey, father Charles Lackey, and sister Orlean McClure. Her survivors include her sons, John Culbertson and Elisa Buteau, James Culbertson and wife Cheryl, Jack Culbertson and wife Constance; granddaughters Kaley Culbertson and Rachel Culbertson; and brother Jack Lackey.
The family would like to express their gratitude towards High Desert Hospice and Brookdale Assisted Living of Albuquerque for their caring and loving treatment of Charlstie in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in Charlstie’s honor would be appreciated.
