Bruce was received by his Lord in Heaven on November 24, 2018, after suffering a stroke on November 7, 2009.Bruce grew up and attended school in DeLeon, Texas. He married his childhood sweetheart, Maxine Quinn, on December 1, 1953 in De Leon. After he was drafted into the US Army in 1955, Bruce was stationed in Ft. Ord, CA; Ft. Polk, LA and lastly at Ft. Hood, TX.Bruce & Maxine were blessed with 3 children; Teresa, Timothy Bruce and Tammy. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1961, Bruce had various jobs in Midland and eventually retired after 22 years as a Lease Operator with the John L. Cox Oil Company.Bruce was a hard working family man and loyal friend to many people. He loved hunting and fishing and being outdoors (a love that he shared and passed on to Tim). He was the greatest storyteller and would say…”I’ve got a story to tell you. If you’ve already heard it…Sit back, relax and get comfortable because you’re about to hear it again.” He was a practical joker and loved to make us laugh. “Pappy” loved his grandkids (gave them their own special nickname☺) and would fashion equipment to keep them busy in the backyard (turn a boat into a swing or a swimming pool)….took turns taking the kids to the oilfield with him to run his route….Everything was outdoors and active. Thank goodness there weren’t iPads back then. There wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t do for the kids that he loved so much.Bruce accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age in De Leon. He & Maxine have been members of Wilshire Park Baptist Church for over 50 years.Bruce is survived by Maxine, his loving wife of 65 years; Daughter- Teresa and husband Dennis Holiedy of Midland; Son – Tim and wife Jamie Skaggs of Brownwood, Tx; Daughter – Tammy and husband Billy Brookshire of Midland; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by Brother: W.A and wife Billye Skaggs of Granbury, Tx. He was predeceased by parents Byron & Elsie Skaggs; Brothers: Zollie, Albert, Billy Skaggs and Sister: Evelyn Skaggs Wise.Bruce was a loving husband, a great Dad, wonderful Father-in-law and the Ultimate “Pappy” to his grand, great and great-great grandchildren. He will be missed deeply but we rejoice that he is now perfected and no longer suffers in his broken body after the stroke.Funeral services have been entrusted to Nalley-Pickle-Welch Funeral Home and Crematory of Midland, Texas where Visitation with the family will be held on Monday, November 26, from 4-6 pm. A Memorial Service will be held at Wilshire Park Baptist Church, where Bruce and Maxine have been members for over 50 years, on Tuesday, November 27th at 2 pm. His son Tim Skaggs will officiate and Clark Racca of Hospice of Midland will assist. The family appreciates Homebound Care of VA; Nurses Unlimited and Hospice for their care and compassion. We are most thankful for Latreca Jackson & Dray for their loving care for the last several years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials in Bruce’s name to be directed to the Aphagia Center of West Texas 5214 Thomason Dr. Midland, Texas 79702 to help others who have suffered a stroke or traumatic brain injury.1 Thess. 4:13-14 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.,
