Everet Miller left a message on September 21, 2010:
My father, Frank Miller, worked at B & B Construction for 25+ years. As a teenager I worked most of my high school summers, weekends and holidays there. Many of those days were under the tutelage of Billy Boyd. I was surprised to read in his obituary that he was only 12 years older than me. At my age of 15, he seemed like a seasoned veteran, which he was. He always made sure I had a job, if not on a pipeline project, then around the shop or yard, but he always managed to get me 10 hours. He taught me how to straddle an open ditch with a backhoe to dig out a plug. He showed me how to start a piece of equipment on a cold winter morning when no one else could, and most of all, how to tell someone they had to carry their weight and earn their money, or give them their one warning if they were not. I must share one time in particular. He had me drive an old drag line from the Harper, west of Odessa, to Coyanosa, a trip that took the better part of the day at 30 MPH. Leaving the location, he said to me to drive his pickup. About half way back to Odessa he asked if I had my license. Knowing that he meant my commercial license, I responded that I just traded my learner's permit for my regular license. He said, "Don't tell Ed Barham or Bill Vance you drove the drag line, just say you drove my pickup." After studying my face a little, he said "Don't worry about it, I'll tell them not to ask you." And that is how Billy Boyd got it done! I learned of his passing totally by accident this past weekend. I was fishing with a friend from Odessa who had brought the Odessa American. Living in Corpus Christi, I'm always curious about what's going on in Odessa. I picked up the local section and it opened to the obituary page. I looked at that hat and I knew even before I saw his name, it was him. Please accept my condolences and know that many people lost a great friend.
