Betty Lou (Pendergraft) Angelo passed away peacefully at the family home she loved on Sunday, February 5. She was affectionately known as Penny to all her friends, a nickname coined from her maiden name during her childhood. Born on September 2, 1935, in Galveston Texas, she was the only child of Clifford Eugene and Betty Arrington (Bowles) Pendergraft. She graduated from Lamar High School in Houston in 1953 and The University of Texas at Austin in 1957. After graduating, she moved to Odessa, Texas, to become an eighth grade PE/Science teacher.
On a blind date arranged by her roommate, she fortuitously met her soulmate and lifelong partner, Ernest Angelo Jr., a Petroleum Engineer working for Gulf Oil in Crane. They were married on December 27, 1958, and moved to Midland where there they raised their four children and devoted themselves to the city, St Ann’s Catholic Church, their friends, and their family. Penny gave everything and then some to whatever and whomever needed support. She tirelessly volunteered for her children’s activities and became an integral part of several organizations, including Gamma Phi Beta, Midland County Republican Women, Girl Scouts, Contemporary Study Club, the Lee HS band, St Ann’s Church Choir, DAR, the Junior League and MOSC. She was also a founding member of the Wagner Noel and served many years on the Texas Medical Board.
Penny was never idle, always cooking someone’s favorite meal or dessert, needlepointing, or quilting another heirloom for family, friends, or an organization, such as the Haley Library’s Christmas tree ornaments. Always joyfully giving of herself to others and never asking anything in return, her handmade quilts and Christmas stockings will be cherished for generations to come.
Penny loved spending her summers on the Taylor River in Colorado with friends and family, and where her grandchildren fondly remember their time at “Granny Camp.” She was the great woman behind the great man, the mother behind the successful children, the Gren behind her loving grandchildren, the friend everyone needed, and the volunteer stepping up to help those in need. She lifted us all up and helped us in countless ways. She will be greatly missed.
Penny is survived by her husband of 64 years, Ernest Angelo Jr., children Helen (Frank) Kisner of Midland, Patricia Angelo of Midland, Ernest E. (Margo) Angelo of Carmel, Indiana, Cliff (Jill) Angelo of Austin; grandchildren Betsy and Kimberly Kisner of Midland, Molly (Bob) Viana of Mableton, Georgia, Maggie (Greg) Goodin of Indianapolis, Indiana, Connor Angelo and fiance Leah Kissinger of Denver, Colorado, Murphy Angelo of Indianapolis, Colin and Peyton Angelo of Austin, and great-grandchildren Ellianna and Alfred Viana.
The family would like to thank all those who helped Penny over the last few years, especially Dr. Dimri, Esmeralda, Janelle, Michelle, Petie, Shay, Sheila, Yolanda, and all of the wonderful people at Hospice of Midland and Midland Emergency Services. The family would also like to thank friends for their love and prayers. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Haley Library or your favorite charity.
