Bertha Sanchez Camarillo, 96 of Midland, Texas, passed away on June 4. A rosary and eulogy will be held at St. Ann’s Church in the chapel on Monday, June 10th at 7 pm. A service will be held on Tuesday, June 11th at 11:30 am at St. Ann’s chapel. Reception to follow.
Bertha was born on June 30, 1927 in Sebastian, Texas to Eloisa Cavazos and Amadeo Sanchez. One of eight children, she was raised and schooled in Sebastian where she met her husband-to-be, Lalo Camarillo. They were married in 1950 shortly before her husband served in the Army during the Korean War. After the war, they ran a small grocery store in Santa Rosa, Texas. Her daughter Diana and son Roy were born in south Texas before the family moved to Midland in 1955 where Lalo joined the police department.
Here in Midland, Bertha had two more children, Cynthia and Carlos. Bertha worked in the accounting office of S&Q Clothiers before serving as a Librarian and a Bilingual Teacher’s Aide for the MISD. In later years, she and her husband volunteered with Meals on Wheels delivering food to the homebound, and with St. Vincent De Paul to serve the needy. Throughout her life in Midland, Bertha lovingly gave her time and efforts to St. Ann’s Catholic Church where the family worshipped and attended school. She and her family were strongly engaged in church activities, including the Family Fair, the Sunday choir and the myriad of school and church seasonal events throughout the years. She always said that one of her proudest moments was to travel to Rome to sing to Pope John Paul II with the St. Ann’s Church Choir.
Throughout her life, Bertha tended to the hearts of others, and tried her very best to always see the beauty of this life through the light and love of God’s eyes.
Bertha was the last of her eight siblings. She is survived by her husband, Lalo Camarillo, and her four children Diana (Scott) Boruff, Roy Camarillo (Brenda Tamar Landau), Cynthia (Mike) Harrell, and Carlos (Sarah) Camarillo, nine grandchildren Lindsay Mauermann, Kay, Jennifer, David, Audrey and Hannah Camarillo, Jeremiah Blair, and Noa and Miriam Landau-Camarillo, and three great grandchildren Owen, Nora and Cullen. Nightly, Bertha offered perpetual prayers for her departed grandchildren Zachary and Jeffrey Boruff, Rachel Landau-Camarillo and her great-grandson Brooks Mauermann.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to Polo Park of Midland, Angel Care Hospice, Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home and their wonderful professional nurses, and in particular for the love and care of Ms. Lorna Dunson.
Because of Bertha’s love of books and children, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the library at Holy Cross Catholic High School here in Midland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
