Barbara Alice Wells Cartwright passed away on March 13, 2023 at the age of 89. Barbara was born in Wellington, Texas on March 7, 1934 to Joseph Morris Wells and Rose Prater Wells.
Barbara attended school in Wellington and graduated high school as Salutatorian in 1951. After high school she attended The University of Texas at Austin. It was at UT where she met the love of her life, Jack Cartwright. They were married on June 4, 1955 in Wellington.
Jack & Barbara began their marriage in Midland and lived there until 1957. It was here that their first two children, Cynthia & Karen were born. They moved to Ft. Worth in 1957 where their third daughter, Claire was born. In 1960 they moved to Lubbock, where their son, Wade was born. In 1966 they returned to Midland where Barbara would live for the rest of her life.
Barbara’s life was very busy raising four children and managing all their various activities. Many times her little Ford Pinto would be filled with kids going to one activity or another. She was an excellent cook and spoiled her kids by making a different breakfast for each of them. Barbara was an animal lover and she & Jack started their marriage with a cat named Corky. They had several cats and dogs over her life time. She passed that love of animals to her children.
Besides raising her children, she was involved in numerous volunteer organizations over the years including the Hospital Auxiliary, where she was a “Pink Lady” and Meals on Wheels where she delivered meals. Barbara was an active member of First United Methodist Church where she served on the Visitation Program and worked in the church library. She was a member of the Emmaus Community and was instrumental in getting several of her family members involved.
Barbara loved to travel and she & Jack went on many wonderful trips. She especially loved the time she spent in their vacation home in Cloudcroft. This was her “happy place” and she loved watching all the animals that came around.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, J.M. & Rose Wells, her sister, Jocelyn Alexander, and her son Wade Cartwright.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 68 years, Jack. Her children, Cindy Moats & husband Tom, Karen Hodge & husband Don and Claire Brock & husband Danny. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Michael Hayes & wife Angie, Wayne Hayes & wife Jamie, Hunter Gamero, Stephanie Carrasco & husband Jeff, Jeff Brock, Jackie O’Connor & Husband Chad and Timothy Brock & wife Lindsey.
