Annie Nelson Wright completed her earthly journey on January 20, 2022. She was a servant of God, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and a devoted community leader. She was the matriarch of our family always encouraging us to embrace family and to find the purpose God has for each of us in this life.
Annie was born September 6, 1927, in Salt Branch community, Reagan, Texas, Falls County. She was the second child of 11 children born to parents David Jefferson Nelson and Etta Hall Nelson. She attended Reagan Colored School in Reagan, Texas and completed the tenth grade. Because there were no further educational opportunities for her in Reagan, she moved to Waco, Texas to complete high school. She attended Paul Quinn College and later completed her higher degree at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.
In 1954, Annie took an opportunity in Midland, Texas as a 2nd grade teacher. She taught in MISD schools for 31 years and ended teaching at Travis Elementary. She was a loyal member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club; and President of Greater Ideal Mission Department until her health declined.
Annie was a faithful member of Greater Ideal Baptist Church for over 60 years. She loved the opportunity to serve others and spoke very highly of the women in the Mission Department.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David, and Etta Nelson; her beloved husband William Huawatha Wright, and brothers Troy and Thomas Nelson.
She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy to her daughter, Gwendolyn Wright Colvin, and son Melvin Wright (Yolanda) along with 4 grandchildren, Tracy Colvin (Sibongile); Angela Colvin Acrey (Michael); Marc Colvin (Lana) and Ryan Wright (Tandi); 10 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, siblings Oblee Monroe, Carlee Nelson, Mable Smith, Roy Nelson (Dorothy), Julia Swain (Ernest), Dorothy Ellis, Emma Threat and Erma Morrow, special friend Hye Halsey plus a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will welcome guests on Friday evening, January 28, 2022 at a wake from 6-8pm at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Midland. A celebration of life service will be on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 11:00am at Greater Ideal Baptist Church in Midland, TX, with Dr. George Bell officiating.
