Cynthia Gonzales Garcia, 64, of Alpine, Texas, passed peacefully on Monday, November 17th at 9:55 AM, surrounded by her children and her sister—held in the very love she spent her life giving. A visitation will be held from 6–8 PM on Sunday, the 23rd, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Crematory. Services will be at 11 AM on Monday, the 24th, at Elevate Church in Midland, Texas. Interment will follow at 2 PM on Tuesday, the 25th, at Holy Angels Cemetery in Alpine, Texas.
Cynthia was born on September 27, 1961, in Alpine, Texas, to Francisco Elijio Gonzales and Virginia Carrillo Gonzales. As the oldest daughter of seven siblings, she stepped naturally into the role of caregiver—loving, guiding, and protecting her brothers and sisters with a mother’s heart long before she became a mother herself. She adored the beauty of her hometown and often spoke of the star-filled Alpine skies she would dream under as a young girl.
In high school, Cynthia discovered her love for music through the clarinet, lettering in band all four years. It was also during those years that she met her sweetheart, Guadalupe Luis “Buffalo” Garcia. Together they had three children, and later in life she welcomed her youngest daughter with Billy Joe Porras. She was the proud mother of two boys and two girls—a blessing she cherished deeply, and a balance that brought her endless joy.
Cynthia lived her life for her children, doing everything in her power to ensure they were loved, supported, and given every opportunity possible. She found some of her greatest fulfillment working as a substitute teacher and early childhood caregiver, where class after class fell in love with “Miss Cindy.” She had a gift for seeing the light in every child, and every child who crossed her path left a little brighter because of her.
Her compassion reached far beyond her profession. Cynthia was one of the most empathetic souls to walk this earth—helping countless people in ways big and small. The stories of her kindness could fill a lifetime. Her heart and her home were always open to those she loved. She found comfort in music, in the arts, and even during treatment found beauty in exploring Dallas and discovering new inspirations.
Cynthia Ann Gonzales Garcia was the kind of person whose presence leaves an imprint on generations. Her faith, her love, and her light were unmistakable. To know her was to be blessed by her spirit. “To have her faith is all one could aspire to obtain.”
Cynthia is survived by her brothers Joey, Billy, and Francisco Jr.; her sisters Barbara, Jessica, and Tina; her children Audrey, Matthew, Marcus, and Brianna; and her greatest joy—her sixteen beloved grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Virginia Carrillo Gonzales and Francisco Elijio Gonzales Sr.
Her family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Interim Hospice Care and its dedicated staff and nurses; to UT Southwest for their commitment and compassion; to Dr. Chae and his extraordinary staff for going above and beyond; and to all who have supported, fed, and cared for the family during this difficult time.
Those wishing to make a memorial donation may direct contributions to UT Southwest or to any women’s cancer foundation in Cynthia’s honor.
