James Butler Thompson, III
February 24, 1958 to September 22, 2022
James passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 22, 2022.
James was born on February 24, 1958 in Canyon, Texas to J.B. and Pam (McDonald) Thompson. With his father’s line of work, James moved 15 times before finishing his junior and senior year in Big Spring, Texas.
James studied to become an electrician right after high school and ended up being the youngest master electrician ever licensed in Texas. He was self-employed with a successful business and a reputation for being fair, honest, and hard working.
He married Anna Thomason in 1981 and together they had three children, Brent, Bryan, and Brittany. After divorcing, they moved to Katy, but James stayed close by, attending every ball game and school activity, until his kids graduated. James also lived in his favorite place, Ruidoso NM, for a few years before returning to Big Spring.
James knew no strangers and had the biggest heart. His sense of humor was big and loud and those who knew James knew it was impossible to have a “short chat”. He was known for always stepping up in someone’s time of need – big or small.
His favorite times were skiing with his kids in Ruidoso, hunting on the Davidson Ranch in Ozona with his boys and cousins, deep sea fishing in Port O’Connor, canoeing the Devil’s River, playing blackjack, getting into trouble with his cousin, Larry, and going on road trips.
James is survived by his children, Brent Thompson (granddaughters Charley and Claire), Bryan and Tara Thompson (grandchildren Luke and Taylor) and Brittany Long (granddaughter Ellan), by his stepsons Chad Kemper and Brandon Kemper, by his sisters, Judy Hanson, Beth Harris and Susan Jefferson, and by many nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his father, J.B. Thompson and his mother, Pam Thompson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at J Jayz, 113 S Main St., Big Spring, Texas on October 3, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
